-Layer Hamiltonian Toy Models for Stratospheric Dynamics

چکیده

A two-layer Hamiltonian toy model consisting of two isentropic stratospheric layers is simplified using perturbation analysis while preserving the Hamiltonian structure. These two layers are neutrally and stably stratified. The first approximation applies when the Froude number of the upper isentropic layer is small, such that the upper surface is approximately rigid, and this upper layer is much thicker than the lower layer. A conservative 1 1 2 -layer isentropic model emerges when leading-order perturbation theory is used in the Hamiltonian formulation of the isentropic two-layer model. Furthermore, Hamiltonian theory directly leads to (Salmon’s) L1-dynamics for the novel 1 1 2 -layer model, following a more concise derivation than shown before, when the Rossby number in the upper stratospheric layer is small and leads to a geostrophic constraint.

A parcel formulation for Hamiltonian layer models

Starting from the three-dimensional hydrostatic primitive equations, we derive Hamiltonian N–layer models with isentropic tropospheric and isentropic or isothermal stratospheric layers. Our construction employs a new parcel Hamiltonian formulation which describes the fluid as a continuum of Hamiltonian ordinary differential equations bound together by integral transport laws. In particular, we ...

Topics in Nonhamiltonian (magnetic–type) Interaction of Classical Hamiltonian Dynamic Systems

Abstract. A convenient algebraic structure to describe some forms of dynamics of two hamiltonian systems with nonpotential (magnetic–type) interaction is considered. An algebraic mechanism of generation of such dynamics is explored on simple ”toy” examples and models. Nonpotential chains and their continuum limits are also considered. Examples of hybrid couplings with both potential and nonpote...

Assessing And UnderstAnding the impAct of strAtospheric dynAmics And VAriAbility on the eArth system

O bservational and modeling studies over the past two decades have fundamentally changed our understanding of the stratosphere’s role in surface weather and climate. Interactions between the stratosphere and other components of the Earth system, from the troposphere to the deep ocean, possibly even the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, reveal coupling across a wide range of spatial and te...

THE SPINLESS SALPETER EQUATION AND MESON DYNAMICS

Applying the variational method, the spinless reduced Bethe-Salpeter (RBS) equation is solved for the mesonic systems, and the mass spectra are obtained. The method is applied to the Hamiltonian with the Gaussian and hydrogen-type trial wave functions, and different potential models are examined. The results for the different potentials are in challenge in light mesons, while they are consisten...

Effects of resolution and model physics on tracer transports in the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies general circulation models

[1] We explore the dependency of general circulation model tracer transports on model physics and horizontal and vertical resolution. We use NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) Model E at 4 5 with 20 and 23 layers and the GISS Global Climate Middle Atmosphere Model 3 at 4 5 with 23 and 53 layers and at 2 2.5 with 53 and 102 layers. The online tracers employed are CO2, CH4, N2O, CFC-...
